University space is a finite and critical resource that supports the university’s objectives, including the teaching, research, student life, and operations. Space on the UC Berkeley campus is allocated by the Chancellor to units, divisions, or departments to further the University’s mission. The Office of Space Planning engages in campus-wide space management by working to align the use of physical space with the University’s mission and goals so that campus spaces can be efficient and utilized to their highest and best use. Under the guidance of the Vice Provost for Academic Planning, the Space Planning team:

Oversees the Space Request Process and assists units meet their space needs

Supports the Space Assignments and Capital Improvements (SACI) committee, through recommending space allocations and solutions for temporary surge needs

Administers the Space Utilization Improvement Program (SUIP) to enable departments to more efficiently use their existing spaces

Manages the campus physical space inventory database

Represents the academic mission in the capital planning process

Develops policies, guidelines, and operational procedures around the use of space in collaboration with partners throughout the university

Manages campus-wide space initiatives and projects
