Academic Space on the UC Berkeley campus is defined as assignable or occupiable interior building areas and outdoor locations that are assigned to a group for a certain function. Campus space is considered a part of the University of California and owned by the Regents of California. The Chancellor at UC Berkeley has the authority to allocate space to campus divisions or units, where its operation and management is overseen by a Vice Chancellor, Vice Provost, or Dean. These campus leaders are responsible for determining the allocation of space within their portfolio to be occupied by departments, programs, or individuals.
Space Planning supports both temporary and long-term space allocations and processes Space Requests, while the Space Assignments and Capital Improvements (SACI) committee advises the Chancellor on space allocations.
Along with the allocation and occupancy of campus space come a number of responsibilities in space stewardship. Proper stewardship of campus space includes:
-
General cleanliness
-
Care for the existing infrastructure and timely repair of damages
-
An annual budget to respond to needs and/or maintenance
-
Communication and cooperation with neighboring units
-
Communication and cooperation with Facilities Services
-
Continued use of the space to support the functions for which it was allocated
-
Annual reporting on space data to the department of Space Planning and/or UC Office of the President
-
Adherence to agreements around the use of space
-
Vacating spaces when instructed
-
Responsibility for the proper removal of equipment and contents when vacating space
If departments or individuals are found to be deficient stewards of their space, their allocation can be reviewed and ultimately revoked by the divisional leader, Chancellor, or SACI committee.
